    JOB DESCRIPTION –MECHANICAL WORKSHOP MANAGER TITLE: MANAGER MECHANICAL WORKSHOP

    REPORTING TO: CEO

     

     

    This function involves in the overall supervision of the Mechanical Workshop Operations and assumes responsibility for all functions of this workshop. He is also responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operation of Mechanical Section and Asphalt Concrete (AC) Plant.

     

    LIST OF DUTIES:

     

    WORKSHOP:

    1. Evaluate type of repair/maintenance work in hand and assign the work to the relevant sections in the workshop.
    2. Should the work relate to a fault arising from mishandling of the machinery, vehicle or equipment report to the Management for necessary action.
    3. Prepare a budget cost for all major workshop
    4. Prepare staff roster and assign competent technical staff for each
    5. Evaluate requirement of spares, consumables, tools and implements and facilitate availability of the same to technicians.
    6. Ascertain any work that may need to be done by a third party outside the workshop and arrange for the same.
    7. Supervise progress of work at every stage to ensure efficient and effective completion of the
    8. At completion, carryout necessary quality tests before handover to the user
    9. At completion, review job cost to ensure cost effective completion of the job and keep the JOB CARDS up to date.
    10. Where there is a budget or quotation prepared in advance, ensure completion of the work within the budget or quotation.
    11. Maintain record of historical cost of repairs, maintenance and servicing of all plant, equipment and vehicles.
    12. Regularly review historical records of equipment and advise Management on the economical running of various plants, machinery, equipment and vehicles.
    13. Periodically, advise and recommend to Management/ Board of Directors of replenishment plans and policies for equipment that may need to be discarded.

     

    SPARES STORES:

    1. Manager Mechanical Services, in liaison with the main store-keeper will keep track of all spares held at the main store on behalf of the mechanical section.
    2. Identify the parts to be ordered, more specially from overseas for different makes and models of the plant and machinery in use in the company.
    3. In order to effectively achieve (2) above, for all plant, machinery and equipment in the Company, keep an up to-date library of parts catalogues, CD’s and any other necessary reference material.
    4. Ensure stocks of fast moving and any other vital spares are stored at optimum levels to enable uninterrupted running of the plant and machinery.
    5. Ensure that periodic stock counts are carried out with the assistance of the main store-keeper and necessary action taken on excess/shortage.
    6. Arising from periodic stock count ascertain slow-moving and obsolete Forward recommendations to the Management of ways to dispose the same.
    7. Assist Finance Department in carrying out year-end annual stock-take and valuation of stocks for purpose of statutory accounts.

     

     

    SITE FACILITATION:

    1. In co-ordination with the Mines Manager and Project Sales Team, establish at different stages, the type and number of plants, machinery and equipment that is required at the mines and site
    2. Assign competent and experienced foremen to supervise the machine operations at the
    3. Attend to all breakdowns promptly to enable site operation with minimum
    4. Manager Mechanical Services should regularly visit the work sites, mines, crusher and other sections to ensure the following:
      1. that the equipment is operated by competent and experienced
      2. that the equipments are operated properly and that they are not mishandled, in a way detrimental to the long life of the equipment.
      3. that the equipments are regularly maintained and that they are serviced and fuelled by correct type of fuel and lubricants.
      4. that maintenance record and other records relating to hours worked, fuel consumption etc. of the equipment are maintained up to date.
      5. that the fuel consumption of plant, machinery and vehicles are reviewed for fuel efficiency as frequent as necessary to ensure that, (i) no theft of fuel take place, and (ii) the equipment are maintained fuel efficient.
    5. Where there is any discrepancy found with regard to inappropriate machine operation, abnormal performance of equipment or inappropriate conduct of staff, investigate and recommend further action to Management.

     

    ADMINISTRATION:

    The ultimate responsibility of efficient administration and profitable operation of the Mechanical Services rests with the Manager-Mechanical Services. In this process the following need to be observed:

     

    1. Periodically, review the organisational structure of the Mechanical Workshop, and the different sub-divisions within the workshop, and recommend any changes that may be necessary.
    2. Carryout a staff evaluation to ensure that various positions in the Mechanical Section are manned by persons with adequate technical education and experience. Should there be a need, advise Personnel Office of recruitment/retrenchment programme.
    3. Design programme of in-house training and resource development for the technical
    4. Ensure that the Floor Staff wears appropriate uniform and safety equipment suitable for the work performed. Also ensure due consideration given for health and environment concerns within and surroundings of the work areas.
    5. Ensure the workshop staff are adequately educated on matters of safety, protection of environment and mitigation of pollution.
    6. Prepare monthly reports of mechanical section and AC Plant performance for submission to FAM/CEO/Directors within the scheduled time (10th of each month). Review contents of information and the design of presentation of the monthly report to ensure these reports are
    7. Design and introduce any other administrative records/documentation that will assist in the performance monitoring of overall efficiency of the Section.
    8. Review regularly propriety, condition and adequacy of the existing workshop tools, implements and other workshop equipment and advise Management of any action required.
    9. Ensure, in liaison with the Logistic Manager (LC), compliance of Government/NTSA regulations with regards to all machines and vehicles in the company.
    10. Ensure, in liaison with the Logistic Manager (LC), calibration of all machinery and tools are up to-date and the certificates are current.

    1. Conduct Tool Box Meetings every morning (15 minutes) with the technical staff to plan daily work schedule and issue instructions on technical matters.

     

     

     

    ASPHALT CONCRETE (AC) PLANT OPERATIONS:

    1. The Mech workshop manager will be fully in-charge and responsible to the running of the AC Plant; that will include:
      1. Responsible for the normal production run of the AC Plant
      2. Responsible for the routine maintenance of the AC Plant
      3. Responsible for any break-down or ad-hoc repairs of the AC Plant
      4. Responsible to maintain adequate spares and consumable necessary for the production of AC
      5. Ensure prior to every production run, the plant is verified for technical compliance as against the check-list
    2. Monitor the key raw material (Bitumen,HFO,MC30) for production of AC are maintained at minimum stock order levels.
    3. Ensure clean, quality, dry quarry material is stocked at all times under covered condition, in sufficient quantity in order that final AC out-put is of the highest quality.
    4. Organise and train technically competent staff capable of operating the AC Plant
    5. Keep the general up-keep of the AC plant area clean devoid of any hazardous material that can affect the safety and secure operation of AC Plant.
    6. Check before every production run, fire safety measures to ensure precautions are taken to avoid any possible fire hazard or measures in place to combat in case of a fire incident.
    7. Keep all production and other technical records up to date of the daily, weekly and monthly
    8. Prepare monthly reports for distribution to FAM/CEO/Directors.
